The meeting between Boris Johnson and EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen on Wednesday provided no breakthrough but it seems there is still desire on both sides to reach a deal despite “very large gaps” between the two over key issues. Negotiators have set a deadline of Sunday to settle the matter. A two day EU Council meeting begins today.

US stock indices strated well on Wednesday but closed down for the day after Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said both sides in the US stimulus negotiations were “still looking for a way forward”.
