Stocks open flat ahead of Fed meeting and major earnings reports

UK and European stocks have opened cautiously in a busy week for earning reports with major tech companies publishing results including Microsoft, Apple, Alphabet and Amazon.

The US Federal Reserve meets on Tuesday and Wednesday. Markets are assuming the Fed will leave monetary policy unchanged but chairman Jay Powell’s post-meeting press conference will be monitored closely for clues of a change in stance.

Investors also have to weigh reports of Joe Biden’s plans to double the rate of capital gains tax in the US and of course the shocking surge in coronavirus cases in India.
