Stocks try to hold strong gains made on Monday

On Monday, UK stocks saw their biggest one-day gain since March after Pfizer announced that the first interim results in large-scale trials showed its candidate vaccine against Covid-19 was 90% effective. Global sentiment was also supported by Joe Biden’s victory in the US presidential race. Still, Donald Trump refuses to accept the result and said ‘this election is far from over’, having launched lawsuits in many states.

US stocks gave back ground over the course of the trading day after rocketing early in the session. The major US indices pulled back significantly going into the close, with the tech-heavy Nasdaq tumbling into negative territory.

On the Brexit front, talks resumed in London and the House of Lords voted to reject the government’s plans to break international law.
